What is Erasmus+?
Erasmus+ is the European Union’s programme for education, training, youth, and sport. Launched in 1987 and rebranded with its current name in 2014, it is one of the most successful student exchange programmes in history, having supported over 13 million individuals across its lifetime.
For the 2021–2027 period the European Commission has allocated a budget of €26.2 billion — nearly double that of the previous cycle — reflecting the EU’s commitment to cross-border learning, digital skills, and inclusive education. Pakistani students can benefit through Erasmus+ International Credit Mobility (ICM) partnerships between European universities and Pakistani institutions.

Erasmus+ ICM — Short-Term Exchange
Study or train at a European university for one semester (typically 3–12 months). Your home Pakistani university must hold a valid agreement with the European host institution. The grant covers travel, a monthly subsistence allowance, and waived tuition fees at the host university.
Erasmus Mundus Joint Master (EMJM)
A prestigious scholarship for outstanding non-EU students. An EMJM award covers tuition at two or more European universities, full living costs, and a travel contribution. Competition is intense — a strong academic record and a compelling personal statement are essential.
Capacity Building in Higher Education (CBHE)
Projects that strengthen higher education institutions in Pakistan through curriculum reform, quality assurance, and staff development. Pakistani students may benefit indirectly from improved programmes and direct short-term mobility slots built into CBHE grants.
Erasmus+ Youth & Volunteering
Young Pakistanis aged 18–30 can apply for European Solidarity Corps placements and youth exchange projects that promote active citizenship, intercultural dialogue, and skill development in non-formal settings.
Eligibility Requirements
Requirements vary by programme strand, but common criteria for Pakistani applicants include:
- ✓Enrolled at a Pakistani university that holds an active Erasmus+ Inter-Institutional Agreement with a European partner institution.
- ✓Minimum CGPA of 2.5/4.0 or equivalent — competitive applicants typically hold 3.0+.
- ✓English proficiency: IELTS 6.0–7.0 (or host-institution equivalent). Some programmes also accept TOEFL or Duolingo English Test.
- ✓A compelling Letter of Motivation aligned to the host programme and your academic/career goals.
- ✓Two academic references and a current Curriculum Vitae (Europass format preferred).
- ✓For Erasmus Mundus: bachelor’s degree in a relevant field completed before the programme start date; no prior long-term EU residence.
